Naloxone Services

March 2025

Waythrough is currently seeking expressions of interest from community pharmacies in Barnsley to participate in the delivery of two essential naloxone services for people who use drugs (PWUDs). This opportunity is open to pharmacies that are already engaged in substance use services, such as Needle Syringe Programmes (NSP), Supervised Consumption, or both.

Two Key Services to be Delivered:

  1. Take-Home Naloxone (THN) Programme:
Pharmacies will provide naloxone (both nasal and injectable forms) to individuals who are at risk of experiencing, or witnessing, an opioid overdose.
  2. Emergency Naloxone Administration Programme (ENAP):
Pharmacies will hold a stock of nasal naloxone on-site (supplied to trained pharmacy staff by Waythrough) for use in the event of an emergency overdose situation.

Research and Evaluation:

These services will form part of a 12-month research project, with the first evaluation scheduled after 6 months of service implementation. Waythrough are inviting pharmacies already engaged in substance use services (NSP, Supervised Consumption, or both) to participate.

Service Level Agreement (SLA) and Funding:

Please find attached the Service Level Agreement. (SLA) for both the THN and ENAP programmes. The SLA outlines the programme details, as well as the funding arrangements. We encourage you to carefully review the SLA for more information.

Next Steps:

  1. Review the attached Letter to Community Pharmacies  and Service Level Agreement.
  2. Complete the Expression of Interest. (EOI) form and return it to Barbara Zub at barbara.zub@waythrough.org.uk if you would like to participate in this important research initiative.

Please note that there is an expectation for pharmacies to deliver both naloxone services.
