Pathway information

MECS will:-

Determine if the patient is suitable for a MECS (Minor Eye Condition Service) assessment using the MECS triage form.

If the patient is suitable then either conduct the MECS assessment, if accredited or call / signpost to a local participating practice for onward management of the patient.

Optometrist will use the Opera IT platform for completing a MECS assessments.

 

Inclusion Criteria

If you are registered with a GP in Barnsley, then you can use this service. It is for
all adults and children aged 5 or older. Children under 17 years must be
accompanied at their appointment by an adult.

• Loss of vision, including transient loss
• Flashes and floaters
• Ocular pain and irritation
• Eye infections that have not responded to treatment
• Trichiasis (in growing eyelashes).

 

Exclusion Criteria

Any major eye condition that is being regularly monitored by your optometrists or hospital eye service will not be covered by this
service, for example, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.
