Community Pharmacy Labelling OTC Medication Scheme
Service Overview
The Community Pharmacy Labelling OTC Medication Scheme enables community pharmacies to label over-the-counter (OTC) medicines purchased for self-care, allowing them to be administered in settings such as schools or by care workers—without the need for a GP-issued NHS prescription.
This service supports NHS England guidance, which advises against routinely prescribing OTC medicines on the NHS. By reducing unnecessary GP appointments for prescription labelling, the scheme promotes self-care and appropriate use of NHS resources.
Pharmacies will be reimbursed for the labelling process, with no additional consultation fees, as this falls under the Essential Service – Support for Self-Care within the NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework.
