UPDATE REQUIRED As part of the 2026/27 Supervised Consumption Service Level Agreement (SLA), a new OST prescription management fee of £5.00 per person per month has been introduced. This applies when a patient receives at least one supervised consumption and/or take-home dose within that month. As this introduces a new process for claiming this element of payment, Waythrough have produced the attached guidance to support teams in submitting claims correctly. This SLA encompasses three integrated pharmacy-based harm reduction services: Needle and Syringe Programme (NSP): Provides free sterile injecting equipment, safer injecting advice, brief interventions, and signposting to additional support. Promotes safe disposal of sharps and fosters therapeutic relationships, prioritizing health and safety without condoning substance use. Take-Home Naloxone (THN) Programme: Offers naloxone (nasal and injectable) to individuals at risk of, or likely to witness, an opioid overdose. Emergency Naloxone Administration Programme (ENAP): Maintains on-site nasal naloxone for trained pharmacy staff to use in emergency overdose situations, with supply managed by Waythrough. Together, these services operate simultaneously as a single, indivisible package, supporting harm reduction, public health, and overdose prevention. 1st February 2026 – 31st January 2027 Waythrough Pharmacy NSP SLA BRS 2026 – Final For any service enquiries, please email Elizabeth.Holt@waythrough.org.uk. Educational Event – February 2026
Training was delivered to pharmacy teams in preparation for the 2026/27 contract, alongside a substance use educational event for community pharmacies in Barnsley. The sessions provided a practical overview of harm reduction, supervised consumption, and local service provision, while highlighting the impact pharmacy teams make in supporting patients. Attendees also gained insight into the Barnsley Recovery Steps service. For those unable to attend the event, a recording can be found here – Pharmacy Training – Barnsley Recovery Steps
Online Training Available on the Waythrough Website
Waythrough has developed an online training package that can be completed by colleagues at their own pace.
Colleagues are asked to review the website carefully and select the training option that best meets their needs. Options include video-based learning on how to provide Take Home Naloxone (THN) and the Emergency Naloxone Administration Programme (ENAP), as well as presentation materials that can be used to train other members of the team.
The quiz must be completed by every participant each time training is undertaken.
Waythrough is currently developing a scoring system to allow participants to view their results after completing the quiz. In the meantime, Waythrough will contact individuals if a score of 100% is not achieved to discuss next steps.
The online training package can be accessed here
Waythrough strongly encourages all community pharmacy colleagues providing naloxone services to complete this training.
